History of St Peter and St Paul, Weston-in-Gordano, Somerset.
No evidence exists of a church predating SS Peter and Paul at Weston, but it is likely that there was a previous foundation. The current church was built during the 12th century and the Norman font is probably original. The stone pulpit dates from the 13th century.
There is some debate about the misericords; some people have dated them as 14th century, whilst others think that they may have come from nearby Portbury Priory and may date back to the 12th century. Personally, I feel it is unlikely that the misericords date back to the 12th century, although they are stylistically simple, and it could be argued that they don’t have supporters in the traditional sense, they bear more in common with the misericords at Bovey Tracey, Highworth, Mere and of all places, Greystoke in Cumbria, which date from the 14th to 17th centuries. In addition to this, Exeter Cathedral has for many years been accepted as the oldest set of misericords in the UK - it does not seem probable that a set, at least 20 years older, have been hiding the open at Weston-in-Gordano for all this time. If you have any knowledge or opinions on these misericords, please contact me. So the next question is, when and why were they installed? Ss Peter and Paul is aisless, but it is known that by the 15th century it had 4 altars, if we assume that the misericords were installed as new in the 14th century, then it is probably that their were priests singing masses at these altars. On the other hand if we assume they cam from Portbury Priory, then the likelihood is the misericords were installed after the dissolution of the monasteries to replace worn out choir stalls. So, my educated guess is that these misericords are early to mid 14th century.
During the 15th century the church was heavily renovated.
The rood screen was damaged in the 19th century and was replaced by a simpler example. In 1895 the organ was being replaced, and the ancient altar stone from St Mary Magdalene’s chapel was discovered under the old organ, the altar would have been removed during the time of Edward VI, as he imposed a regulation that all stone altars be replaced by tables. The stone was returned to its original purpose. In 1897 a lychgate was added to the churchyard entrance and is of 15th century design.
