Misericords in British Cathedrals.
Unfortunately, with the puritanical periods, immediately after the Civil War, the Commonwealth and the Victorian era, many misericords were defaced, or removed entirely.
Thankfully many survived, as the choir stalls were kept down, some even jammed down, as they are today and the local powers-that-be, did not know of the misericord’s existence.
You may notice that many of the misericords appear to be portraits; it is often the case, that the carvers, had a particular hate figure - most usually the foreman, the paymaster, or the Abbot who had got up all their noses!
