History of St John the Baptist, Tideswell
Although Tideswell is recorded in the doomsday book, the first documented priest was not assigned until 1193, which means that the current church, which was built over a period of 60 years from starting in the early 14th century, replaced a smaller early Norman church, some of who’s remains can be found in the chancel. The church, often known as the Cathedral of the Peak, is built primarily in the decorated style, in is cruciform is shape, the tower, however, was added later and is perpendicular.
The misericords are probably 15th century and may have been carved by one of the Hunstone family.
St John the Baptist was beautifully restored in 1875.
St John the Baptist has many other fine carvings.
Although the church does not have it's own website, the diocese has a parish page.
