History of St Asaph’s Catthedral , Denbighshire.
Legend tells us that St Asaph was founded (under a different name) in 560 AD, however, there is little concrete evidence of a church here until the 12th century. The Normans were in possession of the area from about 1072, however, the cathedral was probably not started until early in the 12th century, this is given credence by Gilbert, who was the first bishop, was enthroned in 1143.
During the 12th century several updates were carried out, however during the wars between Edward I and Llwelyn ap Gruffydd the cathedral was accidentally burnt down by English soldiers, in 1182, the bishop, Anian II, promptly excommunicated them - this was something that he had refused to do to the Welsh rebels, which somewhat upset Edward, so that he only allowed £100 in compensation to the cathedral.
As early as 1284, rebuilding commenced, and appears to have been continuous, with bursts of extreme activity between 1310 and 1320, until about 1392.
Welsh rebellion in 1402, again, caused many problems, with much of the content and some of the fabric, along with the Bishop’s Palace and the 3 manors being largely destroyed. Repairs were carried out, starting in 1411 and continued for most of the century.
The misericords with their canopied stalls were installed as part of the rebuild in 1482 under Bishop Richard Redman. .
