History of St Andrew’s, Soham, Cambridgeshire.
A foundation was created at Domnoc, which although there is limited proof, is believed to be close to Soham, about 630 AD, by St Felix, known as “The Apostle of the East Angles”, this foundation was destroyed by the Danes during the 9th century, with the normal death of the monks and looting of the treasure.
About 900 a Saxon nobleman built both a cathedral, with a freestanding bell tower and palace - it is worth noting that this cathedral pre-dates Ely, which is in a much more defendable location and like many Saxon cathedrals did not survive long into the Norman regime.  St Felix's remains were later removed by a monk named Etheric to Ramsey in Huntingdonshire, and there solemnly enshrined by Abbot Ethelstan circa 1030 AD.
Although no mention of St Andrew’s is made in the Domesday book, there is a record of the church’s existence by 1102.  The Norman church appears to have been built onto the east end of  the existing Saxon nave.
In 1496 the the freestanding bell tower was pulled down, a new bell tower was built on the same foundation as the original and the nave was extended by one bay, so that the new tower was now joined to the main body of the church.
In 1451 St Andrew’s was ceded to Pembroke College , and it was probably at this time that the misericords were installed - t is worth noting the similarity between these misericords and those at Sutton Courtney, Berkshire and at Wingfield, Suffolk.
