History of St Gregory, Norwich, Norfolk.

Although there has been a church on the site of St Gregory’s since Saxon times, the current St Gregory’s almost all dates from the late 14th century. Built in a mixture of the decorated and perpendicular styles, where, for instance, the clerestory  is fully decorated, but the aisle windows are decorated in shape, but have perpendicular tracery.  It is interesting to note that we actually know the mason involved - Robert Wodehirst, who also worked on the cloisters at Norwich Cathedral in the 1430’s.  The rebuilding of the chancel at the same time was sponsored by the Cathedral Priory.

The misericords are early 15th century, so were probably installed as part of the fittings and fixtures.

The Saxon tower’s spire blew down in 1840, and was not replaced, however this did lead to the refurbishment of St Gregory’s in the 1870’s, where most of the stained glass was replaced and the stonework was re-clad, which unfortunately hides much of the original work, and disguises the tower’s Saxon origins.  During this work, a beautiful wall painting was discovered of St George fighting the dragon.  In 1979 further wall paintings were discovered of the “four doctors”  (no, don’t get your hopes up about time lords), St  Gregory, St Ambrose, St Jerome, and St Augustine of Hippo.  It took until 1999 to fully conserve these images.

St Gregory is now, sadly, a redundant church
