History of Newcastle-upon-Tyne Cathedral, Northumbria.
The first church on this location was built in 1091, and was probably of wooden construction, however, this burnt down in 1216, and was rebuilt in stone. This new church was also destroyed by fire, with the current church being built in 1359.
In 1448 it’s lantern spire was added. This made St Nicholas the forth largest parish church in England.
In 1553 legislation was passed to split the See of Durham and create the city of Newcastle, which would also have included Gateshead, however, upon Mary’s accession, she reversed the legislation.
The interior of the church was badly damaged by Scottish invaders during their brief occupation of the city in 1640, and in 1644, during a nine-week siege, Scottish invaders threatened to bombard the lantern tower, but were deterred when Scottish prisoners were placed inside.
In 1882, the expansion of industrial Newcastle made the necessity of a cathedral for the town self evident, so the Diocese of Durham was split and St Nicholas’ church was elevated to cathedral status and Newcastle upon Tyne became a city.
Subsequent to St Nicholas’ elevation, it was decided to renovate the interior, especially the area of the chancel. The local carver, mason and painter, Ralph Hedley was employed for this purpose and carved the 26 misericords; As the cathedral had neither been either monastic nor collegiate it must be assumed that the misericords are a conceit, but one has to say, a nice one! Ralph has treated the creation of these misericords in a most un-victorian way, he appears to have studied misericords, and created these in a most sympathetic style.
