History of All Saints’ Church, Leighton Buzzard.
Although there has been a church at Leighton Buzzard since the mid 11th century, the current church dates from the late 13th century. The Chancel of the current All Saints, was the first part to be built. It is worth noting that although the wood of the west door has been replaced, the fancy ironwork is original and dates from this period.
Building work has continued into the 16th century, including the 190 foot high spire, and the fabulous 15th century rooves and ceiling. The late 14th century misericords probably came from St Albans Abbey after it’s closure during the dissolution.
In 1985 whilst a restoration of the church was nearing completion a fire severely damaged the All Saints. Immediately after the fire, the congregation hard started a fund for a second restoration. This included repairs to the tower and spire, major repairs and restoration to the wonderful rooves of the nave and chancel. Thankfully the misericords were not damaged in the fire.
