History of St Mary’s Priory church, Lancaster, Lancashire.

A church was founded on this site as early as 630 AD, the Priory moved into this church in 1094, and re-built the existing church.  The priory moved from Lancaster to the Brigittine convent at Syon in Middlesex in 1414 and in 1430 it became the parish church.

Although most of the current church dates from the 15th century (the tower is 18th century), many of the fitments including the choir stalls, with their misericords were kept - it is worth noting that John Ruskin described the fretwork on the stalls as the finest in England.  Unfortunately, the Civil War was not kind to the Priory, and much, including the misericords, was vandalised.

The 20th Century brought a new chapel, dedicated to the King’s Own Regiment.

And if you’re in the vicinity, the tea rooms are very pleasant.
