History of St Catharina’s, Hoogstraten, Belgium.
Although there has been a town since 1210 and a feudal village previous to that, there is no record of a church before St Catharina’s was built. The Cathedral was started in 1524 and too 22 years to build, from red brick and much glass. The cathedral was to all intents a statement - We in northern Belgium are still Catholic, no matter that you, surrounding, Dutch have become protestant! During the period between 1532 and 1548 the misericords were carved and installed, something that no self respecting protestant of the time would have done, and the tower was built so that it reached a staggering 150m, which across the flat lands of Flanders and southern Holland was visible for many miles.
It is hard to say that anything that survives 400 years is not successful, however the height of the tower proved its undoing, when in 1944 the occupying Germans destroyed the cathedral, rather than let it be used as a lookout and signal tower by the Belgian Resistance. This act of vandalism did not go down well with the locals, and it became a communal necessity to rebuild St Catharina’s soon after the war. .Fundraising, obviously took time, however the brick was still in place, and could be re-used, so this time instead of 22 years, it only took from 1952 to 1958. The rebuilt Cathedral was almost identical with the original, using the same floor plan, and reaching the same height in both the nave, chancel and tower, there were subtle, and not so subtle differences, not least of which are the windows, which are some of the most beautiful mid 20th century stained glass.
St Catharina’s, Hoogstraten does not, as of September 2010, appear to have its own website.
