S28

A man wearing a hood with liripipe riding a goat, looks backwards and blows into a horn [missing]; a rabbit hangs over the back of the goat.

S29

A man lying down embracing a donkey; the carving was probably inspired by the story of Balaam and his ass.

S36

Combat between an eagle with huge talons and a young fox.

S37

Winged human figure thrusting a spear through a dragon- the spear-head can be seen emerging at the back of the

dragon’s head. This may be St. Michael slaying the devil.

S38

A horseman with a flowing cloak and wearing spurs is shown riding at full speed; he holds the reins with his left hand and blows a hunting horn held in his right hand. A dog is shown and there is a rabbit hiding by the tree near the horse’s forelegs.

S39

The temptation of Adam and Eve. Adam and Eve in the Garden. The serpent is shown with wings and a horned, human

head twined around the tree in the centre. Adam is just receiving the apple from Eve. [Modern]

S40

Four-footed animal, prominent rib-cage, with curling tail and semi-human face, riding a heavy-looking horse.

S41

A lion is stealthily stalking a fox that has taken refuge in a tree. Aesop’s fable?

S42

S43

A lion fighting a dragon. The lion is on the dragon’s back, and is biting its neck. The foot at the bottom belongs to the dragon, whose tail has thrashed up over the lion’s back. The dragon’s head has turned to bite at the lion, and its teeth, eye and ear can be clearly seen t the left of the lion’s head.

S44

Two ferocious dogs have chased a fox up into the branches of a tree, and on the left, an archer with a long-bow is shooting at the fox. The dogs’ heads and the upper part of the long-bow have been broken away.

S45

A lion fighting a dragon. The dragon is on its back [a wing can be seen near its head and its tail is on the left] and it is biting into the lion’s stomach; the lion, uppermost with its tail near the dragon’s head, is biting the dragon near its hind legs.

S46

S49

The Sacrifice of Isaac. Here Isaac is kneeling upon an altar and Abraham, his left hand on Isaac’s head, holds the sword [mostly broken  away] in his right hand. A winged angel has appeared by Abraham’s shoulder, and is holding the blade of the sword; the ram, caught in the thicket, is shown near the altar.

S50

A dragon- a four-footed beast with the wings, head and feet of an eagle; it was the commonest of all monsters and was frequently used to symbolise the devil.

The knight on his left has been wounded through his shield, and the impact of the blow has forced his horse back on its haunches; the anguish on the face of this knight is particularly well-shown.

S53

A man, dressed in the costume of Chaucer’s period, is supporting the bracket with his right arm. His tight tunic is buttoned to the waist, and the edge of his hood is richly embroidered; he wears a belt which carries his purse and dagger.

S55

A human figure with the lower half of his body resting on his back, and with the upper half turned around. His hands are in the attitude of prayer, but he seems to be holding something between them; there is a large strap passing over his body. Could be a man, sick with the palsy with his begging bowl.

S56

A boy [badly damaged] stands on either side of an oak tree; the cuts in the trunk of the tree and the stance of the boys suggest that they might have been chopping the tree down. A woman carrying something in her right hand is approaching them from the left; on each side in the background is a donkey.

S57

The wrestlers. Two men, stripped to the waist and wearing braies [medieval breeches] are wrestling, each holding the other by a short scarf around the neck.
