History of Gloucester Cathedral
There has been a foundation at Gloucester since 678 AD, this was St Peter’s Abbey Church,  which was built of wood.  Sometime in the late 8th century the wooden church was replaced by a stone church.  In 1058 the church was again rebuilt, this time in a much grander style., unfortunately this church was destroyed by fire in 1088.  The following year, construction of the current Cathedral church was started, and in only 11 years it was ready for consecration. In 1122, the cathedral was again hit by fire, and repairs, hampered by lack of money took over 90 years!
King Edward II was buried in Gloucester Cathedral in 1330, after his unjust murder, this made his tomb a site for pilgrimage, which made the cathedral enough money to embark on a major rebuild, in the Gothic style. The misericords date from this period, probably 1350.
