Public school’s do not mean to us, what they mean to our American cousins...  In the UK

State School is the equivalent of an American public school - i.e. It is paid for by the state and not by the pupil

Public school is the equivalent of an American private school - i.e. It is open to the public as long as they have the money to pay for it.
