Dronfield

History of St John the Baptist, Dronfield, Derbyshire.

It is known that a church existed on the site of St John’s since at least 1135, and was probably a place of worship considerably earlier.  The current church is early gothic is style, so probably dates from the late 13th or early 14th centuries.

In 1349 the Guild of the Blessed Virgin Mary was formed in Dronfield and shared domicile in the hall of the chantry priests, this may well explain the presence of the misericords., although no firm date is known for the misericords.
