Church Gresley

History of St Mary and St George, Church Gresley, Derbyshire.

Sometime between 1100 and 1154 William de Gresley founded an Augustinian Priory of which the church was part.  After the dissolution of the monasteries  the priory buildings fell into disrepair, however the nave of the priory church was maintained as the parish church.

The misericords almost certainly post-date the restoration of the kings, as the Commonwealth would have been unlikely to approve of misericords - as shown by the number that were destroyed.
