History of Cartmel Priory

Cartmel, in picturesque Cumbria, not far from Morcambe bay, founded 1189, by the Earl of Pembroke, who was also Baron of Cartmel. As a legacy of the Baron's instructions that the priory church should always be open to the locals, Henry VIII had less choice than normal about selling the Priory church to the parish, during the dissolution of the monasteries.

The 15th century misericords show much of the pagan bestiary, including the Green Man, represented in N8, N11, S2 and S12.
