History of St Mary the Virgin, Blackburn, Lancashire.

All though the current church was only built in 1826, there seems to be very little information about any preceding churches.  St Mary’s was built as a parish church, however, in 1926 the church was updated to Cathedral status with the formation of the diocese of Blackburn.  Early in the 1930’s it was decided that the cathedral needed to be enlarged as befit its status and fundraising started.  By 1938 work began, however, WWII got in the way, so work was delayed, and not completed until the early 1960’s.

It appears that the misericords, which are situated in the north transept originated in Whalley Abbey.
