Alpheton

History of St Peter and St Paul, Alpheton, Suffolk.

Aelfflead (from whose name Alepheton derives), sister-in-law to King Edmund I (921 - 946) moved to the manor adjacent to the current church in the second quarter of the 10th century.  There is no record of a church at that time, although one almost certainly existed, even if only as a chapel to the manor.  The Church’s fabric is probably 11th century, but may be older.  The black Purbeck marble base of the font is 13th century.  The fine piscina and sedila are 14th century. The stoup dates from 1430 and the porch is mid-15th century.  The misericord, sadly damaged, also dates from the mid-15th century.

St Peter & St Paul does not, as of August 2009,  have a website.
