I have created this website, due to a personal love and fascination with misericords, I hope that eventually it will become a world resource and educational tool.  I am, however, an electronics engineer by trade, rather than an historian, so I plagiarize history texts from many sites, which means that I might be guilty of propounding “Wikipedia myths”.  If you see that I have done so, or that I have made any errors, which you can help me fix (including incorrect numbering of misericords) please, please contact me and I’ll put them right.

Misericords.co.uk is a non-profit organization.  I do not buy or sell misericords, or condone those who do, I believe that the best place for them is in the location that they were originally placed, or barring that, museums.

I must apologise that the naming / numbering is not always consistent, this is due partly to having been gifted Jim Umson’s and other’s great work, and all of us having created different numbering schemes.  The other reason is that I may have had to visit some places several times over several years to gain access to most (if not all) of the misericords - often parts of the choir are blocked off to the public. Or when parties of visitors come through, I have to move to a different part & then come back - this means that my photos are no longer in the correct order.  However, I do the best that I can and as mentioned any help is appreciated..

In the case of the numbering using the following formats...

NL    means North, Lower
NU   means North Upper
SL     means South Lower
SU    means South Upper

When the north or south prefix is used, numbering starts from the Altar.

Other times when just numbering is used, without a prefix, this means the order that I scanned them, and has no geographical referent.

Copyright notice.
In General, due to the gift from Jim Umson’s family and my anonymous donor, I have removed copyright restrictions from this site, there are, however, a few exceptions. (1) Some donors have elected to retain their copyright. (2) I am in discussion with the authorities at some locations that do not normally have the misericords on public display, this may mean that the copyright is shared between the Dean and Chapter (or similar bodies) and myself - pages that contain copyrighted images will be explicitly marked and rigidly maintained.

Permission is granted to use any non-copyrighted images for non-commercial purposes, such as church website’s, charitable publications etc., as long as www.misericords.co.uk is credited. Please let me know if you wish to use them.
Copyrighted images, and commercial purposes must have written permission from www.misericords.co.uk. Please use the contact page to discuss this.
All images are approximately 1024x768, if you would like higher resolution images, then again, please use the contact page and I can arrange to provide these.
